So little miss Zoe bean really gave her parents a scare for 3.5 days. Only eating half of the amount she normally takes in. I wouldn't have been in such a tizzy about it if she didn't normally in take 34-38 oz of milk every day. But to go from 34-38, to 15-20 oz, something wasn't right. And I literally asked a million and one questions to all the NICU team, Cardiology, Pediatric Surgery, our pediatrician since February 5th, what are the signs we need to look for if she starts to go into heart failure. Lack of eating is one of them, sweating is another, blue around the lips and finger nails are two more, sleeping alot more. Well she sweats alot as it is, and was sleeping all day long for 3 days in a row, and then the lack of eating. These signs really freaked me out. Its really hard to convey to anyone who has a healthy heart child what I'm actually thinking or feeling. Most people will never have any idea what Mike and I have gone through (and continue to go through).
I know some of you reached out to me and said "maybe its a growth spurt". A few weeks ago, she started going through her growth spurt because we graduated to 6 oz bottles from 4 oz bottles. She was also getting up for an additional feed in the middle of the night versus sleeping 10-11 hours straight. And the pediatrician agreed, she didn't feel it was a growth spurt. I've stayed away from google because I've know each baby is completely different from the next, and each heterotaxy child is different.
Yesterday, Mike was daddy day care and conveyed she was an eating machine. Finished all six 6 oz bottles yesterday. She also got me up at 10, 2 and 5. She never awakes that many times. So, I think we have our sweet little chunky monkey back! I switched out our nipples to the level 2, hoping that will help as well. So far so good. Thank you all for the wonderful support with the emails and text messages.
As you can see Zander loves Zoe so much, and vice-a-versa. He gave her lots of snuggles once she came back from the doctor. He was pointing to her heart and said "boo boo" (I've been teaching him about her scar on her tummy and her heart as we will always have lots of appointments), then grabbed her hand to make her feel better. He's one sweet boy.
My hubby is running in the Ragnar Relay today and tomorrow. 200 miles from Madison to Chicago, a 12 person relay team. The CFD has two 12 man teams, however 10 men dropped out last minute, so now each guy has to run roughly around 35.7 miles. Seriously?!? Mike is crazy, but a determined man. I'm so proud of him! So please wish him luck!
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
I'm wondering if those three days were her preparing for a growth spurt? My oldest would cut back on eating and sleep more for a couple days and then bam! Nursing every twenty minutes 24/7 for days. It's almost like the extra sleep was him resting up to start his feeding marathon lol
ReplyDeleteI'm glad she is back to eating more again! It's hard not to worry about every little thing for a "normal" baby and it's even worse with our little heart babies!
So happy to hear she is eating lots again.Being a heart mom is such a worry. Many people have no clue, you are so right.
ReplyDeleteTake care
So glad she's back on track again. I too know those worries and if I can offer any advice it is to never stop asking questions and being Zoe's voice. Never stop using your mommy intuition and get the answers you need. You and Mike are doing a great job. :) -Ashley
